In our natural state, we human beings are intimately interconnected and interdependent with the environment as well as ourselves.  In today’s frenetic, urbanized culture, many of us are disconnected from our natural roots. The loss of this connection creates imbalance in our beings, which can manifest in a variety of ways including physical pain, sleep disruption, anxiety and a sense of alienation.

Nature can be the answer. In the stillness of an oak forest, our bodies unwind. In the gaze of a young deer, our minds behold what is truly important in life. In the silence of a cypress swamp at dawn, our spirits are restored. In the majestic beat of an eagle’s wing, our fears fall away. We gain clarity, we gain perspective, we begin to know ourselves. This is the outer journey.

Yoga is about the inner journey. We explore our mind body connection, gain self awareness, increase physical health and decrease stress. Through practices such as breath, meditation, chanting and asana (physical poses), we strengthen as well as stretch our bodies, minds and spirits. By journeying inward, we grow in ways that we could not have imagined.

My goal as an instructor is to guide you in exploring yourself by bringing you back to your body and strengthening your connection to the natural world around you. We will meet the animals and plants that share not only your backyard but all of this precious world with us. I will help you discover the skills you need to feel strong, confident and balanced no matter where on Earth you might find yourself. There is nothing to fear, and everything to gain.

Archery

Traditional or primitive archery is an art that was created thousands of years ago all around the world. Jan is the child of a traditional bowhunter and a competitive Olympic archer and learned to shoot almost as early as she learned to walk. She has used that knowledge throughout her life for enrichment, competition and sustenance.

Private lessons tailored to fit any skill level are available by appointment. Her style is a unique blend of instinctive shooting, medieval and renaissance archery and modern Olympic style. This style is well suited to traditional bowhunters, traditional target archers and historical recreationists!

  • 2011 & 2012 North Carolina Traditional Archery State Champion

  • 30+ years of traditional archery experience

  • Expertise with equipment selection & tuning

  • Artisanal wood arrows & leather archery accessories

  • Member of NFAASCA and Sissipahaw Traditional Archers

Yoga

Jan's journey with yoga began when she was a baby, when her mother moved her into poses before she could move herself. As she grew up, she continued to practice with her mom and at public classes.

In college, Jan was fortunate to find an excellent Alternative & Complementary Therapies department, at which she intensively studied Hatha Yoga, Ayurveda and Yoga Therapy. She began to integrate the teachings of yoga with her healing practice.

Yoga was always a presence in Jan's life, but it wasn't until the last few years that Jan realized its true transformative power for herself.  This led her to further investigation with yoga teacher training.

Jan graduated in October 2013 from the Whole Heart Yoga Teacher Training & Immersion Study program at Moving Mantra Yoga Studio. Whole Heart teaches Hatha Yoga, with an emphasis on therapeutic yoga techniques.

Currently, Jan is teaching Wild Freedom Yoga at Yoga on Main in Fuquay-Varina. She is also offering Yoga Therapy at both her Holly Springs and Raleigh practices.
